A West Tennessee man has been awarded an $835,000 settlement after he was arrested and jailed last year for a Charlie Kirk-related post.

Larry Bushart , a 61-year-old retired police officer who lives in Lexington, spent 37 days in jail after being arrested Sept. 21 for sharing a meme on Facebook related to the assassination of Kirk, a conservative activist. The post read “This seems relevant today...” and quoted President Donald Trump saying “We have to get over it” in the aftermath of a 2024 shooting at a Perry High School in Iowa.
