The Metro Planning Department has introduced the Design and Development Strategy for Nashville’s urban core — billed as an initiative that offers a comprehensive look at how the government’s services, procedures and requirements are guiding growth in the most urbanized parts of the city.

According to a release, the city’s urban core is defined, in large part, by areas that initially developed prior to the advancement of the automobile culture in the 1950s. These areas include downtown and Midtown (extending to Interstate 440). The bulk of the geographic area defined by what is the city’s high-density epicenter offers primarily large residential and commercial buildings and only a modest number of free-standing single-family homes.
