Emergency Preparedness Drill At Watts Bar Nuclear Plant

Fishermen cast their lines in the waters above Watts Bar Dam November 7, 2001 in Spring City, Tennessee. More than 90 warning sirens blared over a 10-mile radius during a routine emergency preparedness drill at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant.

Tennessee has submitted a proposal to the U.S. Department of Energy for Oak Ridge to become the site of a Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus, a new federal-state partnership effort from the DOE to expand the use of nuclear energy and advance economic growth and workforce development.

The state has proposed that the city of Oak Ridge, which served as a site for the Manhattan Project during the 1940s, be the venue of a new nuclear facility. The proposal highlights Oak Ridge’s comprehensive nuclear infrastructure, highlighted by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Y-12 National Security Complex. These locations have facilitated fuel fabrication, enrichment, reprocessing and recycling of used nuclear fuel.
