Bills targeting LGBTQ Tennesseans veiled in misleading language

On Tuesday, March 5, a group of activists came to the Capitol for the purpose of stating their opposition to pending legislation they regarded as inimical to the LGBTQ communities of Tennessee. In the press conference room of the Cordell Hull Building that morning, they outlined their concerns and specified four bills they regarded as especially objectionable to LGBTQ Tennesseans.

The subsequent history of two of those bills has highlighted a problem that may be unique to the current historical moment, in which the discussion by legislators of certain controversial subjects is veiled in purposely misleading language and trickled out in deceptive and irrelevant talking points so as to disguise the very nature of what is being talked about.
