House Democrats on Thursday elected to the post of House Leader liberal California Representative Nancy Pelosi, over Tennessee’s Harold Ford Jr. The vote was 177 to 29. Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur dropped out of the race just before the vote.

The 32-year-old Ford would have become the first African-American to head the party. However, Ford was considered a long shot from the day he announced his candidacy.
