VU golfer earns Masters, U.S. Open spots with U.S. Amateur showing

John Augenstein

Vanderbilt golfer John Augenstein narrowly lost the U.S. Amateur final to Georgia Tech senior Andy Ogletree on Sunday, but still came away with a significant prize.

Augenstein, a senior, earned an automatic exception to the 2020 Masters and U.S. Open as the event’s runner-up. (Ogletree also received a bid to The Open Championship.) Augenstein, who was first-team All-SEC and third-team All-American this spring, was one of the top-ranked amateur players in the tournament at No. 38 in the world. He became the first Vanderbilt player to reach the U.S. Amateur final since Luke List in 2004.
