As first reported by NashvillePost.com last week, Metro Councilmen Ludye Wallace and Mike Jameson have filed a resolution asking state lawmakers to “take the action necessary” to reinstate the practice of placing lighted text messages and graphics on the exterior of the William R. Snodgrass Tennessee Tower, once a tradition in downtown Nashville. In fact, all state lawmakers need to do to fulfill that request is follow the law.

Prior its purchase by the State of Tennessee, the Snodgrass Tower routinely displayed community service messages and graphics on the exterior of the building. It did so by selectively lighting and darkening windows by laboriously pulling down shades. At Christmas time, for instance, messages included "Peace on Earth" and "Noel." The designs and messages became a tradition for Nashvillians and part of the fabric of the Nashville night skyline. They also provided promotional assistance for local nonprofit organizations and community events and drew the attention of tourists and motorists passing through Nashville.
