SmileDirect set for down day on heels of Q2 report

Shares of SmileDirectClub are in for a notable reversal Thursday after the maker of dental aligners reported a second-quarter net loss of nearly $95 million and executives said they expect Q3 shipments to be down about 20 percent from 2019.

Downtown-based SmileDirect reported second-quarter revenues of $107 million, down from $196 million in the prior-year period, and an operating loss of about $74 million. The latter number includes nearly $25 million in costs related to the closure of its Texas manufacturing plant as well as the lease abandonment of several floors at its Philips Plaza headquarters as executives looked to control costs.
