Michael Burcham grew up in Booneville, Miss. He mowed lawns at 14, joined the Army National Guard to pay for college, and landed his first real job at HCA. By 31, he had a business plan, no investors, and an appointment with one of Nashville's biggest money men — whose opening line was: "What the hell are you thinking leaving HCA?"
