A Vanderbilt researcher has been awarded $6.2 million to study the effect of opioids on the brain.

Vanderbilt’s Carrie Jones will work with University of Glasgow’s Andrew Tobin using funds from the Discovery Award, part of Great Britain's Wellcome Trust. The pair will study if blocking a receptor in the brain (M5 muscarinic) will prevent or address opioid addiction. The effect could be the development of a medicine that allows safer use, than otherwise, when coupled with opioids, according to a press release.
