Veteran Middle Tennessee State University President Sidney McPhee announced Tuesday he will retire when his contract ends in December.

McPhee, who has served as the Murfreesboro-based school's president since January 2001, delivered his decision via a letter to MTSU Board of Trustees Chairman Stephen Smith at the conclusion of Tuesday’s trustees meeting.
