Whiskey with Nashville tie launches

Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Whiskey, a brand with a Tennessee connection, has launched in Portland, Oregon, and will be available in Nashville in August.

The Uncle Nearest team worked with two Tennessee-based distilleries on the product, according to a release. The release does not note which distilleries.

The whiskey is made, in part, to honor the memory of Nathan "Nearest" Green, believed to be the first African-American master distiller and who taught distilling techniques to Jack Daniel.

Uncle Nearest operates a small office in Nashville and also has a Portland presence.

“This whiskey is meant to bring to the forefront the man who so few outside of Lynchburg, Tennessee, knew was one of the most important master distillers in the creation of what is now known as Tennessee whiskey,” the release notes. “Having spent so much time with Green’s descendants, our founders knew their desire was to honor him with a premium whiskey made as close to his way as possible and bring it to every bar and spirit shop around the world, so everyone would know his name.”

The price for the product as recommended for Portland retailers is $59.95.
