Ex-Tennessee Volunteers basketball star Ron Slay spent the better part of 2021 as a recurring guest host throughout 104.5 The Zone’s lineup of shows.
Now, the station has hired Slay full-time, joining co-hosts Brent Dougherty and Dawn Davenport on 3HL, which airs Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. His first day was on Wednesday.
“I am both delighted and eager to join the 104.5 The Zone and 3HL families,” Slay said in a release. “I hope to bring joy, energy, and insight to Nashville sports enthusiasts each day.”
Added 104.5 program director Paul Mason: “Our listeners have made it clear that they want us to hire Ron Slay. I am happy to say we listened, and we are thrilled Ron Slay will be joining Brent Dougherty and Dawn Davenport on 3HL. 3HL is already a great show, and I look forward to seeing it go to even higher levels.”
A prep standout at Pearl-Cohn High School, Slay finished his high school career at Oak Hill Academy before committing to Tennessee. He averaged 9.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game during his freshman year, helping the Vols win the SEC championship and make it to the Sweet Sixteen.
Slay was named an All-SEC third team selection as a sophomore and the SEC Player of the Year and third team All-American as a senior. He went undrafted in the 2003 NBA Draft and played for several European teams until 2016.
The 39-year-old Slay was a popular candidate to replace Midday 180’s Jonathan Hutton, Paul Kuharsky and Chad Withrow when they departed the station to join former 3HL co-host Clay Travis’s new Outkick Network. Instead, Cumulus Media hired Buck Reising, leaving the door open for Slay to join 3HL.
“Ron Slay is a superstar,” Davenport said. “His positivity and energy are contagious. I’m so excited to have him as a teammate, and now our 3HL listeners get to experience that every day.”
“Ron Slay was known as a player for his infectious personality along with the passion and energy he brought to the hardwood,” Dougherty added. “I’m so excited about Slay bringing all of that and more to 3HL.”
