Prospective candidate Clippard takes leave of bank

04-15-2005 4:30 PM — B.C. “Scooter” Clippard Jr. has taken a leave of absence as chief development officer for Lexington, Tenn.-based FirstBank, the bank reported late Friday.

Clippard has been mulling a decision to make a gubernatorial run as the Republican candidate facing Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen in next year’s election. One of the most prominant members of the State Republican Party, Clippard has never held public office.

FirstBank founder and president Jim Ayers stated in a press release that he was “pleased to extend” his support to Clippard “in whatever he chooses to do.” Clippard was also quoted in the release thanking Ayers for “giving me the time I need to explore other opportunities.”

A tireless fundraiser for Republican causes, Clippard attained "Super Ranger" status with the campaign to elect President George Bush in the last election cycle by raising in excess of $300,000.

Calls to Clippard’s bank offices were not immediately returned.
