Driver Atwood sues racing team that cut him

01-04-2005 1:39 PM — Nashville-based race car driver Casey Atwood has sued his former employer, FitzBradshaw Racing, in federal court here in Music City.

According to Atwood’s Nashville attorney John Robert Reynolds, the lawsuit alleges that North Carolina-based FitzBradshaw is in breach of the driver service contract it signed with Atwood for the 2004 racing season. Reynolds told NashvillePost.com that Atwood “is suing for various compensation available in that contract.”

FitzBradshaw Racing announced in October 2004 that effective immediately Atwood would no longer drive for the team for the remainder of the year. In a press release at that time, the team’s co-owners, Armando Fitz and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback and FOX TV broadcaster Terry Bradshaw, stated that they planned some significant operations changes in 2005 and wanted to incorporate new personnel sooner than later. At the time, Atwood appeared publicly to be okay with the split. “I’ve enjoyed my time with FitzBradshaw Racing,” he said in a release. “But so many driver decisions are discussed and made over the next two months, and this gives me the opportunity and the time to structure what’s best for me for next year.”

Atwood started 29 races in 2004. His top finish was second place in Richmond in September.

FitzBradshaw Racing fields three cars in the NASCAR Busch Series. The United States Navy sponsors the No. 14 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that Atwood raced.

A message left with Fitz earlier Tuesday had not been returned prior to publication of this story.
