Gov. Phil Bredesen issued a statement this evening after news emerged that President Barack Obama has chosen Kathleen Sebelius, governor of Kansas, as his nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Bredesen had been seen as a strong contender for the post after original nominee Tom Daschle withdrew from consideration a few weeks ago.

Calling Sebelius "an absolutely first-rate choice" for the job, Bredesen expressed confidence that she "would be in sync with President Obama's goals for health care reform."

Saying he has been friends with the Kansas governor for several years, Bredesen described her as having "an excellent mind" and displaying "obvious empathy for the plight in which so many Americans find themselves" in dealing with health care cost and accessibility.

"She has been a great governor, is well respected by her colleagues, and for my part, I stand ready to help her in any way," Bredesen said.
