Richard Bracken will slide into the chairman's seat at HCA Dec. 15, when Jack Bovender will retire from the hospital company he has helped lead for most of the last two decades.
The 57-year-old Bracken, who assumed the president and CEO roles at HCA on Jan. 1, has been a director of the hospital giant since 2002. After rising through the company and leading its Western Group, he was named COO in mid-2001 and added the president's title in early 2002.
In a statement, Bovender said he "could not envision a better successor or a more qualified guardian of our company's legacy."
For Bovender, stepping down as chairman will mark his second retirement. The 64-year-old also left HCA for more than three years in the mid-1990s, but returned to help clean up the company after its failed Columbia experiment.
Along with Bovender's retirement and Bracken's appointment, CFO Milton Johnson also will join the board. The 52-year-old has been in current position since 2004.
