Nashville Mayor Karl Dean has been named a 2010 fellow at the Urban Land Institute, a position he says his team will use to shape the development of Davidson County’s core and its major thoroughfares.
At the ULI’s Daniel Rose Center for Public Leadership in Land Use, Dean will – along with the mayor of Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Phoenix – learn more about programs that will encourage smart development in Nashville. Along for the ride with him is a small team comprising Metro Planning Director Rick Bernhardt, newly named economic development director Alexia Poe and Bert Mathews of Mathews Development Co., who chairs the ULI’s local chapter.
“One of my goals for Nashville is to focus future development in our urban core and along our major corridors, where we have existing infrastructure,” said Dean. “This type of infill development – rather than sprawl – will strengthen our neighborhoods and build strong communities where people can live and work. We have a unique opportunity to use the national resources of ULI to help our city chart a course for smart growth and development for decades to come.”
The Daniel Rose Fellowship program was launched last year as a best-practices venue for “creative, efficient and sustainable land use practices.”
