LDS Church buys land in Brentwood

Mormons planning meeting house near Nolensville Road

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has purchased a plot of land in Brentwood, the possible future site of a Mormon meeting house, NashvillePost.com has learned.

The property is 6.7 acres on Sunset Road near Nolensville Road. The Corporation of the Presiding Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints bought the property from James Michael McKinney for $850,000.

The church eventually hopes to build a meeting house on the land, according to Quinn Johnson, a church planning manager formerly assigned to the region. However, Johnson could not comment on the status of those plans as he has been reassigned to a different region. Calls to the current regional planning manager were not returned by this morning.

A meeting house differs from a Mormon temple in that the former is used for weekly worship and community gathering while a temple is reserved for the church's most sacred ceremonies.

The church's growth in Nashville has been a subject of controversy in the past. Plans unveiled in 1994 to build a temple on Old Hickory Boulevard in Forest Hills ran into a wave of opponents citing congestion and zoning concerns. The temple (pictured above) was eventually constructed next to Battle Ground Academy in Franklin.
