Fortis closes La Vergne site

Newly created plastics company pulls plug on local plant

Fortis Plastics has shut the doors of its location in La Vergne, NashvillePost.com has learned.

The decision was made in early November, according to representatives of the plastics company, which was created last month from the remnants of two other ventures by New York private equity fund Monomoy Capital Partners.

The La Vergne site, which sits just west of Smyrna Airport, had less than 30 employees, according to Sloane & Company, Monomoy's New York-based public relations firm. The representatives could not offer information on whether those employees lost their jobs or were transferred to other Fortis locations.

Monomoy took control of the La Vergne location as part of its purchase of a division of Atlantis Plastics Inc. Atlantis had been a major supplier for the Whirlpool plant in Jackson, Tenn., before that location also closed.

State officials have made attempts to lure Fortis to headquarter in the state, but after losing Whirlpool, the new company is unlikely to locate in Tennessee. Kentucky has made a substantial offer to bring the new headquarters to Henderson.
