CBL & Associates Properties Inc. announced plans today to add an upscale outdoor retail space to the Cool Springs Galleria mall.

The project is called “The District at Cool Springs,” and will add 200,000 feet of premium retail space to the more than 1 million in existence at the Galleria. Planners envision the space as a scenic, outdoor promenade featuring junior anchor stores, fashion boutiques and a cluster of upscale restaurants.

Dana Katterjohn, CBL’s group marketing director, said The District will fill demand for retail space in the lucrative Cool Springs area.

“In the past, when large national retailers wanted to come into the area, we haven’t been able to work with them, so this will help us out in that regard,” said Katterjohn.

The project’s plan and budget haven’t been finalized, but Katterjohn said the District will replace one of the parking lots on the west side of the Galleria complex.

The first phase of a possible three is set to open in 2011.
