Rising levels of uninsured and charity care cases put a damper on HCA's first -quarter results released this morning.

Total revenue climbed 6.7 percent to $7.1 billion. Same-facility admissions and revenue were up as well.

But same-facility charity and uninsured discounts jumped by nearly 20 percent from last year to $799 million. Likewise, the company’s provision for doubtful accounts increased to $888 million from $691 million a year ago.

As such, the hospital giant’s net income dropped falling to $170 million, down from $180 million in the same period of last year.
