
In today's New York Times, Gov. Phil Bredesen is offering up a solution to what has become increasingly contentious and uncertain Democratic presidential primary. He is calling for a "super delegate primary."
Bredesen, who has yet to endorse either Sen. Hillary Clinton or Sen. Barack Obama for his party's presidential nomination, suggests that all Democratic super delegates meet in June for a "two-day, business-like, gathering."
The alternative of a drawn-out Clinton-Obama battle, Bredesen says, would produce "a long summer of brutal and unnecessary warfare. We would face a summer of growing polarization. And we would face a summer of lost opportunities - lost opportunities to heal the wounds of the primaries, to fill the party's coffers, to offer unified Democratic ideas for America's challenges."
