Circuit Court nominees down to three

Commission pares list for Circuit Court vacancy that could force special election for Metro Council

The Tennessee Judicial Selection Commission has decided on which three Nashville attorneys will be considered by Gov. Phil Bredesen for a vacancy on the 20th Judicial District Circuit Court, a decision that could set off a special election for the Metro Council.

Among those recommended for a judicial seat created by the retirement of Judge Walter C. Kurtz is Metro Councilman Mike Jameson. Should he be selected to fill the seat, Jameson would have to resign from the council and thus force a special election for his seat.

Already, a number of individuals names have surfaced as council contenders should Jameson get the nod. Previous council candidate Peter Westerholm and attorneys Jeff Ockerman and Kenny Byrd are among those said to be mulling a bid.

The only vote that counts right now is that of Bredesen, who can reject the slate presented to him by the selection commission or choose one of the following on a timetable of his own discretion.

The nominees are:

Joseph Pitts Binkley, Jr.
Attorney, Law Offices of Joe P. Binkley, Jr.
Nashville, TN

Michael F. Jameson
North, Pursell, Ramos & Jameson, PLC
Nashville, TN

Mary Ashley "Marsh" Nichols
Special Master, Davidson County Circuit Court
Nashville, TN

The Judicial Selection Commission's naming of the Circuit Court finalists comes a day after the group pared down a list of 11 to three for the Chancery Court seat being vacated by Richard Dinkins.
