The combination of thriftier consumers and operational investments resulted in strong third-quarter sales numbers at Dollar General.

The Goodlettsville-based discount retailer posted $2.6 billion in sales last quarter, with same-store sales rising 10.6 percent. Gross margins rose from 28 percent a year ago to 29.7 percent, but the company posted a net loss of $7.3 million after settling a lawsuit that arose from its sale last year to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts for $34.5 million.

Looking ahead, CEO Rick Dreiling – who also has been named chairman – said the company is upbeat about sales trends and remains committed to its spending plans for store improvements and expansion.
