Maynard calls for public meeting on economic development

At-large Councilman looking for ways legislative body can stimulate Nashville economy

11-21-2008 3:00 PM — With the state facing an $800 million budget shortfall, at-large Councilman Jerry Maynard has called for a public meeting on how Metro can insulate itself from the anticipated trickle-down effect and spur economic development in Nashville.

The meeting, set for Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. at the Historic Downtown Courthouse, will include Metro Finance Director Rich Riebeling, Mayor’s Office of Economic Development Director Paul Ney and members from the private sector.

“Our sales tax revenue is down, we have an economic crisis nationwide,” Maynard said. “Of course we’ve been fortunate enough to not have it hit Nashville as hard as other places, but we don’t need to wait for things to happen.

“We need to be proactive to make sure we stimulate our economy here.”

Maynard said he was going to ask Riebeling and Ney for legislative ideas Metro Council can enact to spur the economy.

“Here’s the question: ‘What can Council do within its authority to try to stimulate the economy?’” Maynard said. “From a legislative perspective, can we suspend certain fees that we charge in order to help developers and help those who cause our economy to row?

“We need to find out what it is we can do to stimulate our economy.”

Maynard said he was curious to hear from Ney about what his office can do.

“I want to hear from Paul Ney,” Maynard said. “What are the strategies and initiatives from the administration regarding economic development? Let Council know what we can do to work with the mayor.”

Ney said he was aware of the meeting and happy to attend, but had no comment.
