Alex Hurder, a clinical professor with the Vanderbilt University School of Law, has been named to chair the Commission of Mental and Physical Disability Law.
The group advises the American Bar Association regarding improving diversity within the legal profession, and grapples with government policies related to disability rights.
Previously in his career Hurder has served as a court-appointed monitor in federal cases involving Tennessee efforts to comply with Medicaid laws for the care of children. He has served on numerous ABA and Tennessee Bar Association initiatives.
He joined the Vanderblt law faculty and legal clinic in 1993, after a legal career that included litigation and policy expertise related to special education and disability cases. He is also co-chair of the ABA Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities Committee on Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
From 1983 to 1993, Hurder was managing attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee Inc. and staff attorney for legal-aid offices in Clarksville and Murfreesboro. He held similar roles in the Memphis area, 1977-80.
Hurder also served three years as a representative of the New York City-based National Union of Hospital and Healthcare Employees.
