People: Community Health promotes Paul, announces new division presidents

07-25-2007 1:20 PM — After consummating its merger with Triad this morning, Community Health announced some changes to its management team and in oversight of its hospital network.

Most senior among CHS' appointments was the promotion of Barbara Paul, M.D., to senior vice president and chief medical officer of the company. CHS said she will assist the quality and resource management team and will oversee the hospital system’s physician advisory groups.

Paul joined Community Health last year, having previously served as national medical advisor. Earlier, she held high-ranking positions with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

CHS also announced it has split its network, previously organized into four operational groups, into five divisions.  The presidents of those divisions are: 

  • David L. Miller, responsible for operations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
  • Michael T. Portacci, running operations in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Texas.
  • Gary D. Newsome, overseeing operations in Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and West Virginia.
  • William S. Hussey, responsible for Alaska, Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming operations. and,
  • Thomas D. Miller, who joins the company from Triad, to oversee Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.
