04-26-2007 2:51 PM — Asked by analysts during yesterday's first-quarter earnings call when he plans to name his successor, Amsurg CEO Ken P. McDonald replied: "I would anticipate it would be this year sometime."
The company has retained a search firm and has begun actively looking for candidates to fill the top spot once McDonald steps down. But while plans are in place and the interview cycles have already begun, there does not seem to be any sense of urgency. "Until we find the candidate, which is the key, we're putting no time frame on it," McDonald told the analysts.
When one analyst from Stephens quipped, "bet you're anxious to get on the golf course," McDonald chuckled and countered: "Well, not particularly. But with a company like this and the age that I am, we have got to have a succession plan in place."
McDonald, 66, joined AmSurg in 1993 as a vice president. He has served as the company's chief executive officer since 1997.
