State Sen. Jerry Cooper (D-Morrison) was released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center over the weekend and is recuperating at home, according to his colleague State Sen. Jim Kyle (D-Memphis).

Last week, Cooper was critically injured in a single car accident while heading home on Interstate 24. While Cooper told law enforcement at the scene that the accident was due to his swerving to avoid a truck, the official cause of the accident has yet to be determined.

A blood alcohol test has been completed, but Rutherford County District Attorney William Whitesell has so far declined to release the results of the test.

While the State Senate will reconvene at the Capitol later today, Cooper will not be present.

Updating his condition was Kyle, who told NashvillePost.com this morning: "I spoke to Senator Cooper this weekend. He sounded like a guy that had been in a serious car accident, but his spirits are good. He is home and recuperating. We continue to hope for his speedy recovery."
