On the heels of U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander winning a leadership post in the Republican caucus of the U.S. Senate, there is a possibility that he soon may be joined by freshman Senator Bob Corker.
According to Washington, D.C. political circles, Corker and Minnesota Republican Senator Norm Coleman are being considered to head up the National Republican Senatorial Committee for the 2010 cycle. Currently, Nevada Republican John Ensign heads up the organization.
The NRSC is the fundraising arm of the U.S. Senate Republican caucus. In addition to raising funds, the group disburses financial resources to incumbent members of the U.S. Senate who are Republican and up for election, as well as contributing to targeted races.
South Dakota's John Thune had been considered the odds on favorite for the slot, but over the past few days he withdrew his name from consideration.
Corker could be a favorite for the slot if it is between him and Coleman. Coleman narrowly lost the job to North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole in 2004 but faces a tough re-election battle in 2008. Among those vying for his job is former "Saturday Night Live" writer Al Franken.
