Nashville investment advisor Richard C. Patton has been elected chairman of the board of directors for the American Red Cross' Nashville Area Chapter.

Patton, chief manager of Courage Capital Management LLC, has been on the Red Cross board since 2003. He takes over for Karla G. Smith of KG Communications LLC, who stays in a leadership capacity as immediate past chair.

Courage Capital manages private investment funds. Maybe Patton's election to chairman will mean Krispy Kreme donuts will be served at board meetings, since Courage Capital owns 7.4 million shares of that company's stock, making it one of the largest shareholders at 12% of outstanding shares, according to Krispy Kreme's April annual report.

In addition to Patton's elevation to chairman:

  • Micki Slingerland, chief operating officer of Centennial Medical Center, was elected treasurer;
  • Craig Philip, chief executive officer of Ingram Barge Co., was elected secretary;
  • Carter Todd, senior vice president and general counsel for Gaylord Entertainment Co., was elected audit chair;
  • Bill McMeekin, publisher of the Nashville Business Journal, was elected advancement chair;
  • Peter Rousos, an attorney and business-development executive in Vanderbilt's Office of Technology Transfer and Enterprise Development, was elected governance chair;
  • Jim Blackstock, an attorney, was elected service delivery chair; and
  • Nancy Leach, designer and owner of Facility Planners Inc., was elected health and safety chair.
