Sylvan Park losing coffee shop as Goldie's moves from Belle Meade

Deli's roots run deep in Plaza location

Sylvan Park is losing a coffee shop but gaining Goldie’s Deli.

Murphy’s Loft, a satellite office for this scribe, is closing on Sunday. Employees were told today as someone from Goldie’s was in the shop , going over what would stay and what wouldn’t.

Sandy and Peggy Bates bought the coffee shop, then named Red Rooster, from Daniel Maggipinto and Bob Sillers, both of whom own Caffe Nonna one storefront away.

Coffee shops have struggled in the space for years as the names changed regularly. At one time, Portland Brew was in the space. Now, Portland Brew has a store on Murphy Road again but near the intersection with West End Avenue.

Goldie’s will reportedly be moving from its Belle Meade Plaza Shopping Center location in the next month or so. Owners Goldie and Jeff Morris could not be reached this afternoon.

Its departure from Belle Meade Plaza would mark the end of an era, as a New York-style deli has functioned in that location for decades. Before the Morrises purchased the restaurant in 1996, it had functioned as Schwartz's Delicatessen for many years, nestled between the Kuhn's Big K dime store and Mills Book Store, both long gone from the Nashville shopping scene.
