This morning, Metro Councilman At-Large David Briley officially withdrew from the Vice Mayor's race and announced for Mayor.

This move leaves the Vice Mayor's race with only one declared candidate, At-Large Councilwoman Diane Neighbors. But there are rumors that two other council members -- Carolyn Baldwin Tucker, whose name has been out there for a while, and now Charlie Tygard, a new prospect -- may enter that contest.

Briley, a Nashville attorney, said in an announcement at the newly renovated Metro courthouse that education and keeping the tax burden on Metro residents low are among his major priorities.

Finishing up his second term on the Metro Council, Briley is the grandson of Metro Nashville's first Mayor, Beverly Briley. His brother Rob was just re-elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives.

Other announced candidates for mayor are former Congressman Bob Clement, Councilman At-Large Buck Dozier, and Vice Mayor Howard Gentry.
